Obedience is a tough pill to swallow. It is in our human nature to want to do our own thing and not obey simple rules. Think about the last time you actually went the speed limit… Or didn’t touch something that said “don’t touch” on it… Even small children who cannot even speak find it in themselves to “disobey”.
We are selfish- We don’t want to be told no-
In Matthew 26:41, Matthew tells us “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
It’s not that we want to be disobedient, but we are weak beings. Pretty much, we are going to fail. And just like when we were children, our parents redirected us to what was really best. That is exactly what God does, he redirects us. If we allow him to, he puts us back on the path he has laid out for us.
Proverbs 16:9 reminds us “The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.”
This is where I slip up ALL THE TIME! One of my favorite things to do is PLAN. I will make a plan to plan something. (Yeah, I know…)
As I have grown closer to God, I notice when I am making my plans without allowing God to guide me. This took me a long time to understand. (A LONG TIME)
Personally, I struggle with where I need to be professionally. I have a great job, a very sought after job even.
Yet, I constantly look for another one. God has let me know (sometimes pretty drastically) that I am where I am meant to be. But my human nature and weak flesh still try to do my own thing.
While driving to work, I was listening to KLOVE. The verse was Luke 6:46. When Jesus plainly says, “Why do you call Lord, Lord, when you do not do as I say?”
I heard this verse THREE times that day! I never hear the verse of the day more than once!! God was really trying to tell me something. Later while reading my bible and complaining about work to my husband, I came across that same verse. Wow! It hit me. I finally realized what God was telling me.
-As a parent, we all know that time when we get tired of telling our kids something SO many times. You are finally like, “I’ve told you fifty times not to do that!”
I feel like I can literally hear Jesus’ frustration in that verse. He has told us and shown us, he has redirected us literally so many times!
It’s hard, don’t get me wrong. As Christians we have to try, really try to be obedient to God.
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. God will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.”
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Take this into your heart, may it stir your heart to strive for obedience to God and his will.
