Seeking God’s Will for Asbury- part four

Categories: Rick's Blog

God speaks by the Holy Spirit through the Bible, prayer, circumstances, and the church to reveal Himself, His purposes, and His ways.”  Experiencing God

We’ve talked about how important it is for each of us to share what God is saying; and we’ve looked at what this looks like when it happens. We’ve asked why it is important for us to share with one another what God is saying; and now we’re looking at why we aren’t hearing God.

Jesus said in John 8:47, “He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you don’t belong to God.” Read that again and let its meaning sink in.

Can you say, “Oh My!” If you are truly not hearing from God, you don’t belong to God. If you don’t think you are hearing God speak, you need to examine your walk with God. However, often I find it isn’t that we are not hearing God, it is that we don’t recognize when He is speaking to us. We don’t understand how to recognize how God speaks.

I know some people who God guides through circumstances. As they walk through life doors open or close. It is how God speaks to them. I know others who have actually heard God speak to them. I know other who while praying about something they have a verse pertaining to their prayers pop into their mind. Others I know who are praying and as they read their Bible a verse relating to their situation is there. Some others I know experience a supernatural peace. And still other who have heard God all four ways! How you hear is not important. That you hear is important!

1 Corinthians 12:7 tells us that “To each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” When you recognize God is speaking, that is the Spirit (God) revealing Himself, His purpose, and His Ways. In that very moment you are experiencing God.

Experiencing God

Remember when I mentioned a friend of mine who emailed me out of the blue and said God had given him a verse for me? How would you rate this as God speaking: Was it through the Bible? Was it through prayer? Was it through circumstances? Was it through the Church?

The Bible       Prayer      Circumstances   The Church

When this happen to me I looked at it as all four ways! He was praying. God spoke to him by giving him a verse. It was circumstances to me because he emailed out of the blue. And he was a member of the church.

Examples:

1. We’re praying and fasting about the direction of the church and two people approach you in the same week to offer you possibilities about the facilities. What is this?

2. You’re praying about a new job. An offer comes in and you open your Bible to read and you see, “Stay, don’t go. I will plant you and not uproot you; I will build you up and not tear you down.” Which is this?
